City of Portsmouth, NH DPW Launches Automated Collection Program for Trash and Recycling
Portsmouth, New Hampshire – The City of Portsmouth Department of Public Works is launching an Automated Collection Program for residential trash and recycling services. This program is part of a modernization effort designed to improve efficiency, enhance employee safety, and improve service for residents. The program will begin with wheeled trash and recycling bin distribution in Pannaway Manor.
The program will use automated collection vehicles and City-issued bins. Residents will receive two 64-gallon bins, one for household trash and one for single-stream recycling. The standardized containers are designed to work with automated collection vehicles, provide sufficient capacity for most households, keep materials contained, reduce litter, improve collection efficiency, and create a more uniform collection system Citywide.
Each bin will be assigned to a specific property and equipped with RFID technology to support inventory management, asset tracking, and service administration.
These bins will be used for weekly curbside collection on the scheduled collection day. Only new compatible bins will be picked up for trash and recycling service. Old trash and recycling bins that are not compatible with the automated collection vehicle can be brought to the Portsmouth Recycling Center at 680 Peverly Hill Road for disposal.
Bin distribution is expected to begin in the Pannaway Neighborhood starting in November 2026 with automated collection service to begin shortly after. Further rollout to other neighborhoods will continue in 2027.
Prior to distribution, residents will receive educational materials and information on proper bin use, placement requirements, and collection procedures. Additional information and program updates will be available on the City's Automated Collection Program webpage.
