Hotel Thaxter

About Us

Hotel Thaxter is an upscale, full-service boutique hotel and restaurant (Nichinan) in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, NH. Housed in a beautifully restored 1860 brick and wood building, the property was originally The First Congregational Church of Portsmouth and later The Salvation Army. Its elevated ground floor boasts stunning floor-to-ceiling windows, and its large footprint allows for spacious, comfortable guest rooms. The recent restoration converted the historic building into 15 luxurious rooms featuring wet bars, modern amenities, and locally inspired art. Named for Portsmouth native Celia Thaxter, the hotel celebrates her legacy as a poet, artist, and pioneering hostess of the Isles of Shoals’ Appledore House resort. Guests can enjoy a warm, inviting atmosphere, exceptional downtown location, and immersive local history. Hotel Thaxter combines modern comfort, elegant design, and a nod to New England’s rich cultural past for an unforgettable stay.
