  • About

A visit to Governor John Langdon House takes you back to post-Revolutionary America and the early days of the republic. A three-term governor of New Hampshire, Langdon was also a Revolutionary leader, a signer of the United States Constitution, and a friend of George Washington, who visited the house in 1789. The house features a vast central hall, elaborate carved mantelpieces, a dining room designed by Stanford White, and a large garden with perennial beds, a 160-foot-long rose and grape arbor, and a pavilion.

Admission includes both a house tour and access to a rotating series of exhibitions. Historic New England owns five other houses in the Portsmouth area, Jackson House and Rundlet-May House in Portsmouth, Sayward-Wheeler House in York Harbor, ME, and Hamilton House and Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum and Visitor Center in South Berwick, ME. Visit our website for opening hours and admission information, including a calendar of public programs.

Historic New England is the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive regional preservation organization in the country. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the lives and stories of New Englanders through their homes and possessions.
