Albacore Park, 600 Market Street, a National Historic Landmark Site and Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, announces their Columbus Day event on Monday, October 8, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Join former USS Albacore Crewman, Larry Leppard, as he tells stories on board the USS Albacore.
Leppard, who served on Albacore as a machinist mate/engineman from 1963 to 1966 after serving in the Vietnam War says, “This was the greatest boat. All the research for newer boats was done on this one.”
Leppard will share the story of the meaning behind the patch in the Albacore Park’s Museum Gift Shop that depicts the Roadrunner cartoon and says it originated due to friendly banter between the USS Albacore and the USS Skipjack from Connecticut. Leppard, as well as so many others who served on her, were proud of the accomplishments and speed record performed by the USS Albacore. He said, “…to become a submarine sailor one had to qualify by undergoing tortuous routines. If you made it, you were part of a wonderful group of guys.”
Executive Director Patti Violette said, “This is a family friendly event and one that will be repeated throughout the year with many of our surviving Albacore crewmen. Larry will also play a game called, ‘Stump the Crew’ where a correct answer could win you a coveted USS Albacore challenge coin!”
Albacore Park, the formal site for the USS Albacore Submarine and museum and home of the Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association, provides a sprawling park for everyone’s enjoyment. Daily tours of the submarine run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Albacore Park is one of Portsmouth’s historical gems and all are welcome!
