Meet John Doe is a Frank Capra classic in the vein of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The film, starring our gal Barbara Stanwyck opposite the ruggedly handsome Gary Cooper, pits the common man against big business, in this case, the newspaper industry. When The Bulletin, a big city paper, is taken over by an unscrupulous editor, he renames it The New Bulletin, and changes the motto from, “A free press means a free people” to “A streamlined newspaper for a streamlined age.” Sound familiar? Seventy-five years later, this social commentary still rings true. Meet John Doe is ranked #49 on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years…100 Cheers,” a list of our most inspiring films.
